What is a HEIC file and why convert it?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. Apple made it the default photo format on iPhone and iPad in 2017 because it stores noticeably better image quality at roughly half the file size of JPG. That efficiency comes at a cost: HEIC is essentially an MP4 container with HEVC-compressed pictures, and Windows, most Android devices, many photo printers and most website upload forms still do not accept it.

Converting to JPG solves all of that. JPG is the most widely supported image format in existence โ€” it opens on every phone, computer, email client and web browser without a plugin, and it is accepted by virtually every upload form on the internet.

Feature HEIC JPG
File size ~50% smaller Larger
Works on Windows Needs codec Yes, everywhere
Works on Android Often no Yes
Accepted by upload forms Rarely Almost always
Browser support Safari only All browsers
Converting on Windows or Android? Those browsers cannot decode HEIC on their own. Use Safari on the iPhone or iPad to run this converter โ€” it decodes HEIC natively. Files that a browser cannot read are clearly flagged, never silently skipped.

How to convert HEIC to JPG in bulk

  1. Add the photos. Drag a whole folder of HEIC files into the box above, or tap Browse to select them from Files.
  2. Pick your quality. Choose the "JPG 85%" preset for a good balance, or switch to "Target file size" if you need each photo under, say, 200 KB.
  3. Convert and download. Every photo converts in parallel, then download them one by one or as a single ZIP.

HEIC to JPG โ€” frequently asked questions

Is this HEIC to JPG converter free?

Yes. There is no signup, no watermark, no file-count limit and no hidden paywall. Advertising on this page keeps it free.

Are my iPhone photos uploaded to a server?

No. Your browser reads and re-encodes each photo locally. There is no upload step at all, which is also why the tool keeps working with your internet disconnected.

Does the quality drop when converting HEIC to JPG?

JPG is lossy, so a small amount of detail is discarded. At 85โ€“90% quality the difference is invisible on screen while the file stays reasonably small. Use PNG output if you need a completely lossless result.

Can I convert several hundred HEIC files at once?

Yes. The converter processes images in parallel using background workers, so batches of hundreds of photos complete without freezing the browser.

Will my photos keep their orientation?

Yes. The original EXIF orientation is applied before conversion, so portrait photos stay portrait instead of appearing rotated.

Can I stop the iPhone from using HEIC in the first place?

On iPhone go to Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Formats and choose "Most Compatible". New photos will be saved as JPG. Existing HEIC files still need converting.
