Why convert your images to WebP?

Images are usually the largest download on any web page, and Google's Core Web Vitals score is dominated by how quickly the largest image finishes loading. Switching a site's photos from JPG to WebP commonly cuts page weight by a third with no visible change to the visitor — which means faster Largest Contentful Paint, lower bandwidth bills and slightly better rankings.

JPG to WebP — frequently asked questions

Is WebP really smaller than JPG?

Yes. At matched visual quality, WebP typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPEG. The saving is larger on photographic images and often enormous for images that are currently PNG.

Do all browsers support WebP?

All current browsers do — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 14+ and every modern mobile browser. They are used by over 97% of people browsing the web today.

Will WordPress accept WebP?

Yes. WordPress has supported WebP natively since version 5.8 (2021) and automatically generates WebP versions of uploads on many hosts. Most modern page builders accept it too.

Can I convert PNG with transparency to WebP?

Yes, WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparency is preserved. If you convert a transparent image to JPG instead, the transparent areas are filled with white.

Does converting hurt the image quality?

WebP is lossy at the default settings, but at 80% quality the difference is not visible on screen while the file is much smaller. Choose 90%+ for product photos where detail matters.

How many images can I convert at once?

There is no server-side limit because nothing leaves your device. The practical limit is your computer's memory — batches of several hundred images are routine.
